From Roque de los Muchachos to Roque Palmero

An insight into the hike:

This hike starts at La Palma’s highest and most impressive viewpoint. The rock formations at Roque de los Muchachos immediately reveal a vast view into the Caldera de Taburiente, across Pico Bejenado and, in clear air, towards the volcanic chain of Cumbre Vieja. The route then follows the red-and-white GR-131 close to the crater rim. For a walk of only a little over six kilometres, the scenery feels remarkably expansive and alpine.

After the first descent, the trail crosses or briefly follows the LP-403. The Galileo National Telescope stands directly beside the route, providing a striking technical contrast to the barren volcanic landscape. The road soon disappears from sight again. Between low shrubs, broom and open lapilli fields, the path undulates across the side of the ridge facing away from the crater. Red, ochre and almost black erosion surfaces make this section especially photogenic.

Farther on, the narrow rim of the caldera comes close again. Beyond Roque Chico, small saddles open dramatic views into the steep ravines of the national park. Degollada de las Palomas forms a natural viewpoint before a short climb leads to the 2,310-metre Roque Palmero. Cairns help with orientation on the final section, where the path is not always distinct. From the summit, the panorama includes rugged crater walls, Bejenado, the silhouette of Cumbre Vieja and the Atlantic.

Sunhikes classifies the route as a point-to-point walk but describes the return along the same trail; the identical ascent and descent figures confirm its practical out-and-back character. The stated 6.4 kilometres and 274 metres of climbing therefore cover the complete excursion. Although technically rated easy, it crosses alpine terrain, so sure-footedness, a head for heights and sturdy footwear remain important. Wind, strong sun and sudden weather changes can increase the challenge considerably.

The start lies above 2,400 metres, making a measured pace and sufficient water sensible. In winter or after poor weather, check access, possible closures and conditions on the ridge before setting out. The walk is particularly rewarding on a clear morning before trade-wind cloud begins to rise over the rim.
