Circular hike Pico Birigoyo and Pico Nambroque

An insight into the hike:

The circular hike over Pico Birigoyo (1,807 m) and Pico Nambroque (1,922 m) is one of the most diverse and impressive routes along the Cumbre Vieja on La Palma. Covering around 16 kilometers, it combines volcanic landscapes, scenic ridge trails, and peaceful sections through shaded pine forests. The starting point is Refugio El Pilar, located at approximately 1,450 m elevation in the heart of the natural park.

From the very beginning, you enter the characteristic landscape of the region: fragrant pine forests, dark volcanic ash, and constantly changing panoramic views. As you gain altitude, the terrain opens up, revealing wider and more impressive vistas. One of the first highlights is the ascent to Pico Birigoyo at 1,807 m, offering stunning views over the Caldera de Taburiente, the Aridane Valley, and the island’s western side.

The route then follows the volcanic ridge of the Cumbre Vieja, crossing multiple peaks and expansive lava fields. A particularly striking section is the area around Hoyo Negro, a deep volcanic crater with clearly visible rock layers that illustrate the island’s geological history.

Another major highlight is Pico Nambroque at 1,922 m. From its summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views across the entire island and, on clear days, even to Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro. The sense of space and isolation makes this a truly memorable experience.

The return route leads through varied terrain including lava fields, small ravines, and extensive pine forests, offering a more relaxed and scenic finish after the exposed ridge sections.
