Circular Hike through the Ravines around Barranco de Jieque

An insight into the hike:

The circular hike around Barranco de Jieque links the middle elevations of Tijarafe with a surprisingly varied landscape of ravines. From Cruz del Llano, old traversing paths first pass vineyard terraces and dry-stone walls before entering open Canary pine forest. Gaps between the trees repeatedly reveal views across La Palma’s western slope to the Atlantic.

The highlight is Barranco de Jieque, which forms the upper section of Barranco del Jurado. A towering cliff, water-smoothed rock and the dry stream bed demonstrate the erosive force of occasional flows. Fuente de Trajocade, an old washing place and abandoned plots also recall the former agricultural, forestry and livestock use of these high-level paths.

At 8.1 kilometres the route is not long, but its repeated ups and downs accumulate 617 metres of ascent. Stony and partly paved paths, ravine crossings and the climb to Lomo del Pino require fitness and sure-footedness. Sturdy footwear, water, food and protection from sun, wind and rain are advisable; rocks and earthen paths can be slippery after rainfall.
