An insight into the hike:

This first stage of the GR-130 coastal long-distance trail begins at Plaza de España in the historic centre of Santa Cruz de La Palma. Around Iglesia El Salvador, the town hall and Calle O’Daly, the island capital’s rich history is immediately visible. The route then passes the Santa María replica beside the Naval Museum. The transition from colonial architecture to a rural island trail is surprisingly quick.

The GR-130 leaves town via Barranco de las Nieves and climbs among houses, terraces and banana plantations. Small settlements and cultivated slopes offer a glimpse of daily life on the less sunny but well-watered eastern side. Views repeatedly open across the Atlantic and along the coastline. The stage crosses several characteristic ravines, including Barranco del Carmen, Barranco Seco and Barranco del Agua.

Vegetation grows denser and greener within the protected landscape of Barranco del Agua. Farm tracks, old connecting paths and sections among gardens and fruit trees provide constant variety. A small historic chapel, Ermita de Santa Lucía, offers a peaceful landmark. The stage ends at Iglesia de San Juan Bautista in the centre of Puntallana, notable for its richly decorated interior.

With 615 metres of ascent, the 11.4-kilometre route is more demanding than the description “coastal stage” might suggest. Numerous short climbs and descents across the ravines create a constantly changing profile. Paved or earthy sections can be slippery after rain, while exposed stretches become warm in sunshine. Good footwear, sufficient water and protection suitable for both rain and sun on the changeable east coast are advisable.

As this is a linear hike, arrange the return from Puntallana to Santa Cruz in advance by bus or taxi. Shops are mainly available at the start and in the destination village, so carry your own food for the trail. The GR-130 circles La Palma for about 159 kilometres and is commonly divided into eight stages, making this section an appealing independent introduction to the long-distance route.
