From Mirador de Los Andenes to Roque de los Muchachos

An insight into the hike:

The hike begins at Mirador de Los Andenes with a tremendous view into Caldera de Taburiente. At roughly 2,250 metres, it follows GR-131 along the northern crater rim. Red lapilli slopes, dark basalt walls and sparse high-mountain vegetation create a striking contrast with the forested ravines deep inside the national park.

One of the most distinctive passages is Pared de Roberto, an exposed volcanic dyke crossed through a V-shaped opening. Short climbs and descents then alternate with constantly changing panoramas. Near Pico Fuente Nueva, the observatory’s white telescopes come into view before the final switchback ascent to Roque de los Muchachos.

From La Palma’s highest point, clear conditions reveal the Caldera, Cumbre Vieja, the Atlantic and neighbouring islands. Although the route is a manageable 7.1 kilometres, its continual undulations accumulate 479 metres of ascent. Narrow, stony and occasionally exposed paths require sure-footedness and a head for heights.

The altitude above 2,200 metres should not be underestimated: intense sun, wind, cold and cloud may alternate quickly. Sun protection, sufficient water, sturdy footwear and a windproof layer are essential; postpone the hike in storms, thunderstorms or dense cloud. The same path returns to the viewpoint.
