An insight into the hike:

This exceptional point-to-point walk starts on Pico de la Nieve high above La Palma’s eastern side. The summit area is open and exposed to wind and sun. In clear weather, views reach across the caldera rim and Cumbre Vieja to the Atlantic and Tenerife. The opening feels like a true high-mountain walk even though almost the entire day ahead leads downhill.

PR LP 3 leaves the shrub zone and gradually enters Canary pine forest. Openings reveal the sea of cloud and coast before the woodland closes around the stony trail again. The route crosses the LP-4 several times, so care is necessary at road passages. Temperature, vegetation and sound change markedly with decreasing altitude, as the quiet summit zone slowly gives way to the inhabited eastern slope.

Below the forest, the route continues through suburbs and cultivated land to Santa Cruz de La Palma. Its maritime finish contrasts beautifully with a start above 2,200 metres. The historic centre is soon reached near Plaza de la Alameda and the replica of the Santa María. Balconies, squares and lanes turn the arrival into more than a transport point and invite a relaxed pause beside the sea.

Across 13.6 kilometres there are only 196 metres of ascent but 2,395 metres of descent. The physical challenge comes not from major counter-climbs but from hours of downhill walking. Sure-footedness, resilient knees and poles matter; anyone sensitive to long descents should take the figures seriously. The moderate rating describes the trail technique, not a low overall load.

A pre-booked taxi to Pista Pico de la Nieve is the practical solution because start and finish are far apart. Pack wind protection and a warm layer for the summit as well as sun protection and water for the lower section. Rather than leaving immediately, the walk deserves a gentle finale over a drink in Santa Cruz’s old town.
