Barranco de las Angustias Hike to Cascada de Colores

An insight into the hike:

The hike to Cascada de Colores leads deep into the Barranco de las Angustias and reveals one of the wildest sides of Caldera de Taburiente National Park. It starts at the car park on the LP-214. From there, the route follows the yellow-and-white waymarks of trail PR-LP 13 and soon reaches the bed of the Río de Taburiente.

The route alternates between the stream bed and narrow paths along the ravine. Towering rock walls, water-shaped formations and striking pillow lava create constantly changing scenery. Depending on the water level, several stream crossings may be necessary, so sure-footedness and sturdy footwear are essential.

At Dos Aguas, the Río de Taburiente and Río Almendro Amargo meet. The route then continues towards the national park, with views of the Roque Idafe along the way. The landscape changes noticeably in the Barranco del Rivanceras, where iron-rich deposits colour the stream bed yellow and red. Together with vivid green moss, they create the remarkable colours surrounding Cascada de Colores. Wet feet are likely on the final section and the surface can be very slippery.

The return follows the same route back to the car park. This hike should only be attempted in stable, dry weather. Rain or high water creates a serious risk of flash flooding in the narrow ravine, and the national park may close the trail. Always check the latest weather and trail conditions before setting off. Carry sufficient water and food, sun protection and sturdy hiking shoes.
