For example, I quickly learned that there isn’t much point in driving your own car all the way to the starting point. It’s also very useful to carry one or more waterproof bags in your backpack. Especially in winter, some of the wetter tunnels can leave you quite soaked, and you’ll definitely appreciate having dry clothes and other belongings afterwards.
The hike itself is truly beautiful and varied. The scenery, the tunnels and the special atmosphere make it a real experience. Personally, the only part that has always felt a little long to me is the final descent to Los Tilos, especially when you already have quite a few kilometres in your legs.
Nevertheless, it has been worth it every single time. For me, this is clearly one of the top hiking routes on La Palma and definitely one of those hikes you should do at least once.
An insight into the hike:
The hike to the Marcos y Cordero springs is one of the most spectacular and well-known routes on La Palma and one of the absolute highlights of the Las Nieves Natural Park. This unique trail combines adventure, impressive water landscapes and untouched nature in a remarkable way. Following a historic water channel, the path leads through a total of 13 tunnels, some of them narrow and dark, along steep rock faces and through dense laurel and pine forests.
The starting point at Casa del Monte can only be reached by 4x4 taxi or shuttle bus – access by private car or rental vehicle is not possible. It is recommended to leave your car at the endpoint in Los Tilos, as this is a linear hike. From the very beginning, the route offers impressive views into the Barranco del Agua and the wild, rugged landscape of the northeast of the island.
One of the main highlights are the abundant Marcos and Cordero springs, which emerge powerfully from the rock walls and create an almost mystical atmosphere. Especially in the last tunnels, water can pour down heavily, so it is easy to get completely soaked. It is therefore advisable to protect spare clothing and technical equipment such as cameras or smartphones in waterproof bags.
Afterwards, a long and varied descent follows through green ravines, passing ferns, mosses and unique plants of the laurel forest. Shortly before the end, a detour to the Mirador Espigón Atravesado is highly recommended, offering one of the most stunning views over the protected natural area of Los Tilos.
This hike offers an exceptional variety of landscapes, an intense nature experience and a high level of diversity. It is aimed at sure-footed hikers looking for a more demanding yet unforgettable tour on La Palma.
