In summer, however, the scenery changes quite a bit. The lush green gradually gives way to drier brown and ochre tones, and the uphill sections in the sun can become quite hot. For that reason, it is important to take enough water with you during the summer months.
Even so, it is a very beautiful route, especially if you would like to see the dragon trees up close. If you have a little more time, you can also combine the walk with a visit to the museum and learn more about the history and importance of gofio.
For me, in spring this hike feels almost like a pleasant walk. In summer, it is a little more demanding, mainly because of the sun and the higher temperatures.
An insight into the hike:
The circular walk to Cuevas de Buracas reveals a quiet, rural side of La Palma. From the village square in Las Tricias, old connecting paths lead through small gardens, almond and fruit trees and past traditional houses. The outstanding feature is the collection of mature dragon trees, standing alone or in small groves above the cultivated landscape and giving the route its unmistakable identity.
Cuevas de Buracas provides the cultural highlight. This archaeological and ethnographic site preserves traces of former cave dwellings, livestock shelters, a well and washing places, while petroglyphs recall the pre-Hispanic Benahoaritas. The fragile engravings and caves should be treated with respect and viewed only from accessible paths. The old mill of Las Tricias, now a gofio museum, further connects the hike with the history and working life of the village.
Sunhikes rates the circuit as easy and straightforward to follow. Its 6.5 kilometres nevertheless include around 479 metres of ascent, so it should not be mistaken for a completely level stroll. Sturdy footwear, water and sun protection are advisable, and earthy or stony sections can become slippery after rain. Its many cultural and botanical details make this an especially rewarding choice for visitors who enjoy observing and photographing as they walk.
The route starts and finishes at the village square beside the church in Las Tricias, making it easy to plan without a return transfer and to combine with a stop in the village. The exact course along SL-VG 55, GR 130 and GR 130.1, the complete route description, elevation profile and GPS data are available from our partner Sunhikes.
