Coastal hike Franceses – La Fajana – El Tablado

An insight into the hike:

This hike crosses one of La Palma’s most secluded cultural landscapes. From Los Machines in Franceses it initially follows the historic Camino Real de la Costa between scattered farms and cultivated terraces. The view soon opens into Barranco de los Hombres as the path descends in numerous bends from the greener uplands towards the drier coastal zone.

At La Fajana, banana plantations surround a small settlement that now feels almost abandoned above the surf. Ruined stone houses, remains of an old landing place and traditional roofs made from durable Canary-pine heartwood recall the period when goods were shipped from this isolated coast. Sea cliffs, Atlantic views and the Guelguén nature reserve create a dramatic setting.

From the coast the route enters Barranco de los Hombres again and crosses its dry streambed. A steep zigzag climb then leads to El Tablado. The village occupies a spectacular narrow ridge between two ravines and is characterised by traditional houses and dragon trees. New perspectives over La Fajana, Franceses and the northern coast accompany the return.

At 11.8 kilometres with 964 metres of ascent and almost the same descent, this is a difficult hike. Long steep sections, stony ground and exposed slopes require fitness, sure-footedness and a head for heights. Shade and facilities are limited, so start early and carry enough water and food, sturdy footwear and protection from sun and wind.
