An insight into the hike:
The circuit around San Antonio and Teneguía crosses one of La Palma’s youngest landscapes. From the visitor centre at San Antonio, the first views reach into its crater, more than 300 metres wide, and across the island’s southern tip. Lower down, the reddish and black slopes of Teneguía stand out against the deep-blue Atlantic. Lava fields, ash, sparse vegetation and vineyards create striking contrasts within a relatively short distance.
The area also has cultural significance. Pale Roque Teneguía escaped burial by the lava of San Antonio and carries rock engravings made by the Benahoaritas. Teneguía’s 1971 eruption reshaped the landscape once again and created new land at the coast. The hike therefore brings together visible traces from different volcanic periods with far-reaching views towards the Fuencaliente salt pans.
This moderate route covers 8.6 kilometres and about 358 metres of ascent. Loose lapilli, stony trails and a partly exposed summit section require sturdy footwear and sure-footedness. Shade is scarce, so carry ample water, food and protection from sun and wind. The Teneguía summit should be avoided in strong winds.
The route starts and finishes at Centro de Visitantes Volcán San Antonio. Admission to the visitor centre and crater rim is charged; opening times and prices may change and should be checked before visiting.
