Hike through Los Tilos to Mirador Espigón Atravesado

An insight into the hike:

This short hike reveals La Palma’s green and humid side at its most impressive. It starts where a forestry road closed to traffic branches off beside the lower car park at Los Tilos. After a gentle beginning, the route passes through a tunnel around one hundred metres long and enters the dense laurel forest of Las Nieves Natural Park.

The atmosphere changes noticeably beyond the tunnel: ferns line the way, vines climb moss-covered trunks and filtered light falls through the leafy canopy. The broad forest road remains easy to walk and climbs at a mostly steady gradient, allowing plenty of time to appreciate this distinctive vegetation without technically demanding terrain.

After approximately 2.5 kilometres, a short flight of steps leads to Mirador Espigón Atravesado. The viewpoint projects into the luxuriant slopes and provides an impressive view into deeply cut Barranco del Agua. The return follows the same route. Those with more time can add a separate visit to the Los Tilos waterfall, provided access is open.

Although rated easy, the walk still includes 279 metres of ascent. The tunnel and forest track may be slippery after damp weather. Sturdy shoes, water and a torch or mobile-phone light for the tunnel are advisable.
