An insight into the hike:
One of northern La Palma's most varied circuits begins at Parque Cultural La Zarza. Below the road, PR LP 9.2 enters humid ravines filled with caves, ferns and dense vegetation. Steps, small bridges and protected passages lead through Caldera del Agua and onwards into Barranco de la Magdalena.
Around Don Pedro, old farmland and impressive dragon trees define the scene. The route passes Fuente Vica and briefly follows GR 130 before Mirador de la Calzada opens broad views over El Tablado, Fagundo and the rugged north coast. The circuit closes via Fuente de los Dornajos and Mirador Doña Pola.
At 11.6 kilometres with 804 metres of ascent and descent, this is a substantial moderate hike. Repeated counter-climbs, damp steps and slippery leaves demand more than the distance suggests. After rain, grippy footwear and very careful movement are important.
The loop is excellent for combining Garafía's nature, archaeology and rural history in one day. Allow extra time if visiting the cultural park itself. Sunhikes describes every ravine section and the transitions between PR LP 9.2 and GR 130.
