An insight into the hike:

The circular hike starts at Parque Cultural La Zarza, known for its archaeological site and rock engravings left by La Palma’s indigenous inhabitants. The PR LP 9.2 soon enters Barranco de la Zarza and an exceptionally dense laurel forest. Tree heather, ferns and massive moss-covered rock walls create an almost primeval atmosphere. Small caves and natural overhangs accompany the descent into the humid ravines.

Around Caldera del Agua and Barranco de la Magdalena, the landscape becomes narrower and wilder. The path sometimes follows dry streambeds, crosses stony sections and reaches several springs, including Fuente de la Caldera del Agua and Fuente Vica. After rain, water may run across the dark rock and make the ravine even more dramatic. Even where springs are present, carry your own drinking water and do not assume untreated water is safe.

The low-lying hamlet of Don Pedro provides a striking contrast to the shaded ravine. Views open towards the northern coast between a handful of houses, terraces and distinctive dragon trees. The settlement feels remote and retains much of Garafía’s rural character. There are no refreshments here, so any break relies entirely on food and drink carried with you.

The most demanding section follows Don Pedro: a long and sometimes sunny climb back towards La Zarza. It passes Fuente Los Dornajos and later Mirador de Doña Pola, with wide views across Barranco de Fagundo and the green northern landscape. The route accumulates 774 metres of ascent and descent within just 10.1 kilometres. Steep, stony and potentially slippery sections require fitness, sure-footedness and good walking shoes.

Carry sufficient water and food as well as protection from rain and sun, since the microclimate and temperature can change considerably between the ravine and open slopes. Anyone wishing to avoid the long return climb can finish in Don Pedro, but must arrange a collection or taxi. Check the weather and current trail condition before starting, especially after heavy rainfall.
