An insight into the hike:

Stage four of the GR-130 links Santo Domingo de Garafía with Tijarafe and crosses almost the entire rural north-west of La Palma. It starts at Plaza Baltasar Martín beside Nuestra Señora de la Luz church. The opening already has strong cultural character: historic lanes, traditional houses and the old Camino Real recall a time when these paths were the principal connections between villages.

The route initially follows parts of the narrow LP-114, where blind bends require particular care. It then crosses Barranco de Fernando Porto, Cueva de Agua and Barranco del Atajo. Paved paths, asphalt and steep trail alternate. Around Lomo de Briesta and the neighbouring ravines, Canary pines, cultivated terraces and individual dragon trees shape the scenery. Every barranco brings another descent and counter-climb, so the stage demands considerable energy despite its moderate average altitude.

Buracas and Las Tricias form a scenic and cultural highlight. Ancient dragon trees, caves, petroglyphs and ethnographic remains occur in the surrounding landscape. The MIGO interpretation museum explains the role of toasted gofio flour in Canary Island life. The GR-130 then crosses La Mejera and Corchete ravines to El Fayal recreation area and continues towards Puntagorda. Pine forest, orchards, old mills and Atlantic views keep the journey varied.

Beyond Puntagorda, the path negotiates further cuts including Pinillo, Cueva Grande and Aserradero. Barranco de Garome provides impressive views into the ravine and out to the coast before the route finally reaches Tijarafe. The finish is beside Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria church and a restored wine-pressing site. After 24.8 kilometres, 1,075 metres up and 784 down, the quiet church square feels like an appropriate conclusion.

This stage best suits experienced walkers wishing to combine scenery and culture in a long day. Starting at first light preserves time for the museum, pauses and repeated counter-climbs. Anyone unaccustomed to ten-hour walks should consider dividing the route around Las Tricias or Puntagorda. Return transport and opening hours need advance planning.
