An insight into the hike:
This circuit reaches deep into Garafía’s wild ravine country. From Roque del Faro it descends through laurel and tree-heath forest towards the cuts of Los Hombres and Fagundo. Steep walls, overgrown old paths and glimpses of the surf reveal a side of La Palma far removed from developed viewpoints.
Around Don Pedro and Caldera de Agua, the scenery changes again. Moisture, ferns and dense forest fill the bowl-shaped ravine; streams and waterfalls vary greatly with season and rainfall. The rock setting known as La Catedral provides another memorable landmark.
The figures are serious: 18.8 kilometres, 1,387 metres both up and down, and up to nine hours walking. Long descents are followed by steep counter-climbs. Wet stones, leaves and exposed passages demand experience and sustained concentration.
Attempt it only in stable weather, with a very early start and ample daylight reserve. Shortening via Don Pedro or Mirador del Chorro requires a taxi agreed in advance, and phone coverage is not guaranteed. Sunhikes gives the route, exit points and essential detailed advice.
