Mirador Las Cabezadas in Tijarafe – hidden gem with spectacular panorama over the Valle de Aridane

Are you planning your holiday on La Palma and looking to discover a viewpoint that is not yet among the island’s best-known highlights? Then a visit to the Mirador Las Cabezadas in Tijarafe is well worth it. High above the Barranco de las Angustias, one of the most impressive panoramas on the west side of the island opens up here – with views across the Valle de Aridane, the Caldera de Taburiente, the coast of La Punta and, on clear days, far out over the Atlantic Ocean.

Location and access: Mirador Las Cabezadas is located in the municipality of Tijarafe in the area of La Punta, above the well-known Mirador El Time. Access is surprisingly easy: directly at the road a hiking sign marks the start of the short footpath. Many visitors park their car there and reach the viewpoints within just a few minutes on foot. Alternatively, the mirador can also be included in a short hike, as a historic Camino Real climbs with numerous bends from the Barranco de las Angustias towards the Alto del Time.

Several viewpoints at different elevations: The viewpoint actually consists of several small miradores along the short access path. In total there are three viewpoints at different heights, each offering a slightly different perspective of the landscape. From one point you can look directly into the Barranco de las Angustias, while another opens a wide view across the Valle de Aridane towards the coast.

Panorama over the Valle de Aridane: The views from Mirador Las Cabezadas are among the most diverse in the west of La Palma. From here visitors can see the banana plantations of the Valle de Aridane, the coastline around Tazacorte and Puerto Naos, as well as the impressive cliffs of the Caldera de Taburiente. The new Tajogaite volcano, which formed in 2021, can also be clearly seen from here. Under certain weather conditions the famous Cascada de Nubes – the “cloud waterfall” – can also appear.

A bench with a special view: Slightly below the main viewpoint there is a small building with a bench offering a particularly beautiful view. From here the panorama stretches across La Punta and deep into the Caldera de Taburiente. This spot is perfect for a short break to enjoy the scenery or take photos.

Historic site – Piedra del Guanche: Near the viewpoint there is a prominent rock known as Piedra del Guanche or Piedra del Rey. Petroglyphs have been discovered here that date back to the Benahoaritas, the indigenous inhabitants of La Palma.

Caution at the cliff edge: The mirador lies directly on the steep edge of the Barranco de las Angustias. The view is spectacular, but the terrain drops away very steeply.

A peaceful viewpoint away from the main routes: While viewpoints such as Mirador El Time or Roque de los Muchachos are among the island’s best-known panoramic spots, Mirador Las Cabezadas is still a real hidden gem.

Conclusion: Mirador Las Cabezadas is one of the most beautiful yet still little-known viewpoints on La Palma.
