Monumento al Infinito – viewpoint, artwork and astrophotography spot on La Palma

Are you planning your holiday on La Palma and looking for a place that uniquely combines art, nature and a view into the universe? Then the Monumento al Infinito is one of the most fascinating and underrated places on the island. Located high in the mountains at over 2,100 metres, this spot combines spectacular scenery, artistic symbolism and ideal conditions for stargazing.

Location and access: The Monumento al Infinito is located at approximately 2,166 metres altitude in the north of La Palma, in the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces, along the LP-4 road. It lies between kilometre 28 and 29, below the Mirador Lomo del Mosquito, on the way to the Roque de los Muchachos.

A small sign reading “Al Infinito” marks the access point directly on the road. Nearby there is a simple roadside parking area. From there, a 330-metre stone path leads to the monument. The path is easy to walk and accessible without much effort.

The monument – artwork by César Manrique: The Monumento al Infinito was designed in 1985 by the renowned Canarian artist César Manrique. It was created in connection with the inauguration of the nearby Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos and symbolises the connection between humans, nature and the cosmos.

The approximately 11-metre-high sculpture consists of intertwined forms representing the concept of the “infinite”. Typical of Manrique is the harmonious integration into the landscape, making the monument feel like a natural part of its surroundings.

Viewpoint with a special atmosphere: In addition to its artistic significance, the Monumento al Infinito is also an impressive viewpoint. Its location above the clouds often provides spectacular panoramas of cloud seas, mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.

Compared to more famous viewpoints on La Palma, this location is relatively quiet. As it is not clearly signposted, it is often overlooked, making it a true hidden gem.

Astrotourism and stargazing: The Monumento al Infinito is not only impressive during the day, but also one of the best places for stargazing on La Palma. The combination of altitude, minimal light pollution and clear air makes it ideal.

Near the observatory, you benefit from the same excellent conditions used for scientific observation. There are also informational elements on site to help orient yourself in the night sky.

Astrophotography – one of the best photo spots on the island: For photographers, the Monumento al Infinito is one of the most striking locations on La Palma. At night in particular, the monument stands out dramatically against the starry sky, offering perfect conditions for Milky Way and long-exposure photography.

Due to the low number of visitors, you can often shoot without disturbance. Be aware of mountain conditions, as temperatures can drop and winds can be strong.

Combination with Roque de los Muchachos: A visit can be perfectly combined with a trip to the Roque de los Muchachos.

A place between art, nature and the universe: The Monumento al Infinito is far more than just a sculpture. It is a place where the key elements of La Palma come together: landscape, culture and cosmos.

Conclusion: The Monumento al Infinito is one of the most versatile places on the island, combining viewpoint, art and astrophotography in a unique setting.
