Hiking in the volcanic landscapes of La Palma in March

Hiking & Outdoor Activities in March – Especially Pleasant Now

March is one of the best months for active travelers on La Palma.

Hiking in Puntagorda
In the northwest around Puntagorda , conditions are ideal at this time of year. Temperatures are mild, the landscape is green, and the trails are pleasant to walk. Even though the almond blossom has largely ended, the region remains very scenic.

Caldera de Taburiente
Hiking in the National Park Caldera de Taburiente is also particularly recommended now. Temperatures are significantly more pleasant than in summer, and the water streams often still carry sufficient water.

Volcanic Areas & Lava Fields
A real insider tip in March is hiking near the more recent volcanic landscapes, for example along the Ruta de Los Volcanes .

The black sand and volcanic ash are still pleasantly cool at this time. In midsummer, the dark ground can heat up significantly – whereas in March these tours are much more comfortable.

This season is ideal for photography, landscape impressions and spectacular contrasts.

Traffic Situation in March – Important Notice Regarding the Cumbre

In March, there will be an important road closure on the LP-3 (La Cumbre).

According to the official statement of the Cabildo de La Palma, the LP-3 “La Cumbre” will be closed between km 12+120 (beginning of the dual carriageway) and km 19+175 (new tunnel) in the direction Santa Cruz → Los Llanos .

Period: March 3 to March 5, 2026 (inclusive)
Time: daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM

Additionally, the LP-301 (Refugio El Pilar) will also be closed during the same period.

What does this mean for visitors?

– Those traveling to the west (Los Llanos, Tazacorte, El Paso) should use the southern route via LP-2 (Fuencaliente).
– Alternatively, depending on the destination, you can drive via the north of the island.
– Especially during peak hours, longer travel times may occur.

We strongly recommend planning excursions in such a way that you are not affected during the closure times, if possible. Check current traffic information or navigation apps before departure.

Due to public criticism regarding the closure, short-term adjustments may still occur. The information presented here corresponds to the currently official announcement.

This notice is particularly important for guests arriving at the airport and traveling directly to the west of the island.
Semana Santa procession in Santa Cruz de La Palma

Semana Santa – Beginning on March 29, 2026

from March 29, 2026 Palm Sunday Island-wide
On March 29, 2026, Semana Santa (Palm Sunday) begins.

Holy Week is one of the most important religious traditions on La Palma. Especially in Santa Cruz de La Palma, but also in Los Llanos, El Paso and other municipalities, solemn processions take place.

The official 2026 poster was created by Luis Morera, one of the island’s most renowned artists.

The processions are calm, dignified and atmospheric – a strong contrast to Carnival in the previous month. For visitors, this is an opportunity to immerse themselves deeply in the local culture.

Important note for travel planning:
Around Semana Santa, accommodation occupancy is traditionally very high. Flights – both between the islands as well as national or international – are often fully booked well in advance. Anyone wishing to travel to La Palma at Easter should not wait until the last minute to decide.
