January on La Palma begins in 2026 with contrasts: mild temperatures, green landscapes and ideal conditions for nature and hiking holidays meet a weather-related turbulent start to the year. Heavy rainfall at the beginning of the year as well as several flight cancellations during the first weekend caused many travellers to become unexpectedly stranded on the island. 6 January is a public holiday in Spain and one of the most important days of the Christmas season.
Families celebrate together, children receive their presents and many shops remain closed.

Weather situation at the beginning of the year
January 2026 started on La Palma with periods of heavy rainfall, accompanied by wind and locally reduced visibility.
Higher elevations and individual barrancos were particularly affected.
In the long term, this rainfall is positive for the island as it strengthens vegetation and water reserves,
but in the short term it led to slippery paths and increased caution in ravines and mountainous areas.
Flight cancellations during the first January weekend
Saturday:
– easyJet flights to and from Berlin were cancelled. The aircraft remained on La Palma overnight.
– Eurowings flights to and from Hamburg were cancelled and postponed to Sunday.
Sunday:
– Discover Airlines flights to and from Munich turned back over France and returned to Munich.
– The postponed Eurowings flight to and from Hamburg operated on Sunday.
The situation was particularly problematic as La Palma is currently in the high season: holiday homes and rental cars are scarce, and spontaneous extensions are often difficult.
