La Palma during Calima: Cool hikes in lush green nature

When the hot, dry Calima wind reaches La Palma, the air becomes hazy, visibility drops, and temperatures rise — especially in the lower areas of the island. But even on days like these, La Palma offers refreshing alternatives. In the northeast, you’ll find lush forests, shade, and cooler air — ideal for staying active despite the heat. Two great recommendations: the Cubo de la Galga and the tunnel hike to the springs of Marcos and Cordero.

1. Shady forest hike: Cubo de la Galga

Located in the municipality of Puntallana, the Cubo de la Galga trail winds through one of La Palma’s most beautiful laurel forests. Ferns, mosses, and endemic trees such as viñátigos and laurels create a dense canopy that retains moisture from the trade wind mist.

Thanks to this unique microclimate, temperatures remain pleasantly cool even on hot days. The 4 km circular trail is ideal for all experience levels — and especially well-suited for days with Calima or intense heat.

2. Tunnel hike to the springs of Marcos and Cordero

Another great option is the tunnel hike to the springs of Marcos and Cordero, located in the Los Tilos nature reserve near San Andrés y Sauces. From the visitor center, a 4×4 taxi can take you comfortably up to the starting point at around 1,400 m elevation.

The trail follows historic water channels and passes through 13 hand-dug tunnels. The route is mostly level and shaded, offering a pleasant experience even in summer. Inside the tunnels, water drips from the walls — a welcome refreshment during hot weather.

At the end of the trail, you’ll reach a beautiful green valley with small waterfalls and moss-covered cliffs. From there, you can either return through the tunnels to your taxi pickup point, or continue downhill on foot to Los Tilos.

3. Los Tilos – waterfall, visitor center & viewpoint

Even without a long hike, Los Tilos is worth a visit. A short path near the visitor center leads to a small waterfall that’s easy to reach. For those seeking more adventure, a forest trail takes you to the “Mirador Espigón Atravesado” — a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Barranco del Agua.

Thanks to its altitude, dense forest and high humidity, the climate in Los Tilos stays pleasantly cool — even during Calima.

Conclusion: Escape the heat by exploring La Palma’s green northeast

Even during the hottest summer days, La Palma offers natural retreats in the shade of its forests. In the northeast, misty woodlands, water channels and tunnel hikes make it possible to enjoy the outdoors without the heat. Whether you visit Cubo de la Galga, the springs of Marcos and Cordero, or Los Tilos — you’ll discover the island’s cool, green side.
