Playa de Tazacorte on La Palma – Improvements damaged, beach remains a highlight
In summer 2025, Playa de Tazacorte on La Palma experienced storm damage that affected some of the recent improvements. Still, it remains one of the island’s top beaches for swimming and relaxation.

Playa de Tazacorte – sun, sea & the power of the Atlantic
The beach of Puerto de Tazacorte on La Palma is considered one of the sunniest in Europe and is a popular destination for holidaymakers who enjoy sun, sea and relaxing days on the Atlantic. Only a few weeks ago, around 160,000 euros were invested in improvements and renovations of the playa to offer visitors a well-maintained environment and the best bathing conditions. When the sea shows its strength
But once again, the ocean proved that it cannot be controlled. A strong storm with heavy swell partially damaged the beach in a short time. The added sand and recently renewed sections were washed back into the sea with full force. A vivid reminder of how nature takes back what it wants – and how quickly human work and investments can reach their limits by the ocean. Along the promenade of Tazacorte, near the old harbour directly by the beach, the force of the sea was also clearly felt. At popular restaurants such as Taberna del Puerto or Bodeguita del Italiano, waves splashed over the wall. Anyone sitting in the front row that day witnessed an impressive – and sometimes wet – spectacle showing just how unpredictable the Atlantic can be.Debate about a protective breakwater
For the municipality of Tazacorte, this is a severe setback. Mayor David Ruiz spoke of the urgent need for a maritime breakwater that could secure the playa in the long term. Without such protection, the scenario will repeat itself every year: high costs for improvements that the sea can undo within hours.Bathing & natural forces
For holidaymakers, this means that even in the summer months, including August with its many hours of sunshine, Playa de Tazacorte may not always be suitable for swimming. Instead, it sometimes becomes a spectacular stage of natural forces, where the energy of the Atlantic can be experienced up close. Despite the current damage, Playa de Tazacorte remains one of the best beaches for swimming and relaxing on La Palma, especially popular with families and sun lovers. Together with Playa de Puerto Naos, it is one of the island’s most important bathing spots and attracts visitors from all over the world every year. Conclusion
The debate is open: Should we intervene in nature to secure the beach permanently? Or must we accept that the sea is stronger and will always reclaim parts of the coast? One thing is clear: Playa de Tazacorte remains a central attraction for residents and visitors – whether as a sunny bathing beach or as a spectacular place to witness the power of nature.“
Sunny beach or natural stage for the Atlantic’s power – Playa de Tazacorte remains one of La Palma’s most fascinating places.”
