Proís de Candelaria – the mysterious Pirate Bay in Tijarafe, La Palma
Hidden inside a huge cave on La Palma’s west coast lies the Proís de Candelaria. The Pirate Bay of Tijarafe is a spectacular destination for hikers, photographers and explorers.

Proís de Candelaria – the Pirate Bay of La Palma
Few places on La Palma are as mysterious and spectacular as the Proís de Candelaria in Tijarafe. Hidden inside a huge cave in the cliffs lies a small settlement of whitewashed houses. Due to its secluded location and sheltered access to the Atlantic, the bay is popularly known as Pirate Bay.
A village inside the cave
The natural cave opens about 50 metres above the sea. Inside, houses were built directly into the rock – a unique blend of architecture and nature. Even today, locals still use them as summer homes or storage. A visit feels like stepping into another world, away from everyday life.

History and significance
The term Proís refers to a natural harbour that provided fishermen with safe access to the sea. The Proís de Candelaria was already mentioned in the 16th century. Its name comes from the patron saint Virgin of Candelaria. The hidden location gave rise to the legend that pirates once found refuge here – hence the nickname “Pirate Bay”.

Pure nature
The cliffs rise up to 200 metres, creating a spectacular panorama. At low tide, natural pools with starfish, anemones and crustaceans appear. Particularly impressive is the view from the cave towards the Atlantic – at sunset, an unforgettable moment.
